Thoughts on Tiger Woods' SUN DAY RED

Sponsored by

On Monday night in Los Angeles, Tiger Woods revealed his new golf lifestyle brand, SUN DAY RED. I live in Los Angeles and scored an invite, so I dressed up in my finest cocktail attire and headed to Rick Caruso's Palisades Village for the event, which had two open bars and an impressive charcuterie board. Many from illustrious members of the sports and lifestyle media were there - reporters, golf influencers, YouTubers, linear TV broadcasters, creative consultants - all buzzing about Woods' secret apparel project TaylorMade.

I want to share some thoughts. To help you visualize things, I made an Instagram Reel about the Tiger Woods launch event, along with some thoughts about the SUN DAY RED clothes I got to take home at the end of the night. Go watch it to see the clothes and logo before reading…

Change is hard, patience is key. During a conversation with Erin Andrews at the event, Woods said he’s “aging” and “evolving” in a way that was both confident and melancholy. Him saying those words stuck out to me. As a business venture, SUN DAY RED is a part of Woods’ personal growth narrative - a rare chance for a fresh start at a point in his career when most would start winding down and enjoying the spoils of their legacy vs. building for the future. We’re so used to seeing Woods in Nike after 27 years, seeing him wear his own logo instead of the Swoosh is certainly going to take some getting used to. Building things is hard and takes patience. All good things in all due time.

That said, the logo and name is complicated. Sunday Red? Cool. I get it. That’s the color Tiger wins majors in on Sundays. SUN DAY RED? No reason to be three words instead of two. I think the brand will make this change really quick. The logo? Ick? Maybe a little too similar Puma. Definitely too similar to Arc'teryx. There’s a lot going on. It looks great etched on Tiger’s hat, but I’m not sure it’s immediately recognizable. It’s certainly no Jumpman. On initial impression, it looks more like a generic wall art stencil you’d see for sale in the home decor section at Target. There are a number of famous Tigers with logos - Tony Tiger of Frosted Flakes, the EXXOON Tiger, the Auburn Tigers, the Detroit Tigers. Maybe it will grow on me when I see it in the wild, but there has to be a way to simplify and streamline the SUN DAY RED Tiger logo so it’s more representative of THE Tiger it represents.

UPDATE: Some savvy internet sleuths discovered that the name “Sunday Red” is already trademarked, hence the awkward spelling. Imagine TaylorMade and Tiger Woods are going to try to throw money at the problem to get that name in the future, it just didn’t happen in time for the kickoff of Tiger’s golf season. If and when that happens, who knows? But maybe this will make the original SUN DAY RED merch will be quite valuable and exclusive in the future?

I think SUN DAY RED is going to be the Tommy Bahama of golf apparel. What Tommy Bahama is for the boat crowd, SUN DAY RED will be for the golf crowd. It’s going to be a top tier aspirational golf lifestyle brand. Casual and laid-back yet sophisticated without being stuffy. I think the material quality will force mass produced mid-tier golf apparel brands to reconsider who their customer is. SUNDAY RED is a modern country club than public course with a snails pace of play. On Monday night, Tiger even said how he wanted to go from playing to dinner wearing the same outfit. Did you see the cashmere hoodie Tiger Woods had on at the event? Woods bragged that it’s the first cashmere hoodie in the golf apparel space. I think upscale items like that, along with a signature red polo, will be a huge hit once adopted. I also think the shoes will be a quick favorite for weekend-warrior golfers.

I love the quality of the clothes I received. The garment materials are great quality. The shorts are soft. I can’t wait to wear the black hoodie in the wild and see how it gets recognized. It’s plush and comfy.

SUN DAY RED (man, I really hate spelling it like that) will be available to buy via SundayRed.com on May 1. Golfers seem to be mixed. Some are defending it, others seems to hate it and think it’s a backwards step for Tiger.

I’m a natural born skeptic myself at new things. I think it will take some knocks and snark at first as the world eases into Tiger wearing it, but i think it will do just fine in the long run. I think simplicity will be a driving factor, especially for those looking to get away from the party boy apparel that has taken over the golf world in recent years, as the sport has boomed.

It’s Tiger, after all. Pretty hard to not bet on the guy.

What do you think? Will you buy any SUN DAY RED this spring? Drop me an email: [email protected] to share your thoughts.

Par of me was giving Alyssa Milano the benefit of the doubt over the GoFundMe for his son’s baseball team. I suggested they do old fashioned pizza fundraisers.
