The Great Big BroBible Super Bowl 58 Recap

Another Super Bowl in the books. The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back champs. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are officially a part of a dynasty. The Big Game was filled with big moments, right down to Mecole Hardman’s game-winning catch in overtime. It was a breathtaking made-for-TV circus, as the modern Super Bowl always is. I’m sure Rodger Goodell and the NFL owners are very happy about the year’s viewership and financials.

Let’s talk about Usher. I dug it. I’m not going to rank it or compare it to other halftime shows. Prince, in 2007, is still the greatest Super Bowl halftime show of all time in my book.

I’ll explain what amused me about Usher and the whole extravaganza.

This halftime show was like digging your college iPod out of a drawer at your parents’ house.

It wasn't just a performance; it was a flashback to prom night anthems, college keggers, frat house basement dance parties, wearing a fresh Ralph Lauren button down shirt to a bar on a Friday night, and that first taste of adulting back in the mid-Aughts. His music was everywhere in the George W. Bush years, from sandwich shops to reality TV.

If you’re a certain age (real: elder millennial, age 35 - 43) How could you not say “Luddda!” when Ludacris came out with Lil Jon during “Yeah!” at the end?

It’s clear that millennials are cultural decision-makers now. The Super Bowl half time show is about the most collective cultural experience we have as a generation. Everything else is fragmented and splintered, from media to music festivals.

That’s why Super Bowl’s stroll through memory lane isn't just about reliving our glory days; it's a reflection on how we, as millenials, navigate the nostalgia that both comforts and confounds us.

On Twitter, writer Drew Millard said that Usher is now our generation’s "classic rock.” The biggest stage in all of music is a bridge to a past that's familiar yet, because we’re all grown up now, feels worlds away. It's a reflection of remembering who we were, acknowledging where we are, and pondering whatever the hell awaits us in the future.

The older I get, the more I believe that nostalgia is a trap. The real adventure is the unwritten future and what’s to come.

It’s nice to visit for a little while to take in the view, but not somewhere I want to live or spend too much energy obsessing over. I like that culture marches forward. I get a little uncomfortable living too much in the past. I don’t like it when things get stale.

The Usher Super Bowl halftime was good comfort food: It hits the spot every once in a while, but filled with empty calories you don’t need every day. It’s timeless and good for the soul, but left me wanting something a little fresher.

Maybe Apple Music and the NFL are a little freaked out about what “new” looks like during the biggest broadcast event of the year. I’m sure they’ll get over it as technology evolves and generations change.

They always do.

JJ Watt’s Hair Becomes A Meme During Super Bowl Halftime Show

JJ Watt’s Super Bowl halftime hair looks like he just got back from a shirtless shift working the door at Abercrombie and Fitch circa 2007. Remember that?

49ers’ Kyle Shanahan Gives Honest Reaction To Super Bowl Loss

I feel for the 49ers. I really do. They played some damn good football this year and wore their hearts on their sleeve the whole time. Kyle Shanahan was raw and candid about his emotions, nothing “if I were to lose with anyone, I would want to lose with those guys.”

Temu Ran Five Super Bowl Ads At Record Costs, Leaves Fans Stunned

Sorry, brands and marketers: The only two Super Bowl commercials worth remembering are the all-out blitz from Temu and that Ben Affleck Dunkin Donuts commercial with Jennifer Lopez and Matt Damon that’s impossible-to-describe.

Jesus Washed Feet Super Bowl Commercial Goes Viral

That’s a lot of money to tell people that Jesus liked washing feet. Kind of makes you wonder how it could have been better spent? You know, on people who are really down on their luck and need it?

Tyreek Hill Has No Regrets As He Watches Chiefs Play In 2nd Straight Super Bowl: ‘Our Time Coming’

Sometimes, 'No regrets' feels like a bumper sticker slapped on a life that's seen a few too many sharp turns. I can't help but think a dash of regret here and there wouldn't hurt. It's like admitting you've taken a few wrong exits on the highway of life but learned a thing or two about scenic routes along the way. A smidge of 'whoops' shows you're not just a robot playing the hand you're dealt, but a flesh-and-blood human who's juggled the cards, dropped a few, and still had a laugh about it.

I have regrets about career decisions all the time. Too many to list. They don’t keep me up at night, but sometimes I think about a couple big “what ifs?” For example, I regret that I’m not a funnier or more clever writer. Or didn’t ramble so much when I speak on camera or a podcast. I wish we, as a company, would have been able to make it work with Robby Berger when he worked for BroBible before he started Bob Does Sports (dude is hilarious!), but he was on a trajectory that blasted out of our gravitational orbit as a content business. I loved working with the guy! On the same note, it’s pretty inspiring to see what he built by leaving us in the dust and doing his own thing.

All I’m trying to say here is that I have a hard time believing Tyreek here. It’s not a bad thing to have some regrets while still be grateful about exactly where you are in life.

Taco Bell Unveils Strange New Menu Items At Unique Reveal Party In Las Vegas For Super Bowl 58

This one isn’t about the game itself but the marketing spectacle that happens during the lead up to the Super Bowl these days. In hyper Vegas-esque display of liv mas-ing, Taco Bell announced all sorts of weird new items coming to their menu, including Baja Blast pie.

Beer Prices At Super Bowl LVIII In Las Vegas Beg For Fans To Drink Better Booze For Less Money

The beer prices at the Super Bowl really weren’t that bad, considering Vegas prices these days. I paid $50 + tip for two rounds of beers with a co-worker at The Linq back in January. Agree with Grayson that, when you go to events like the Super Bowl, there’s a way to optimize what you guzzle and get the most bang for your buck.

Chip Kelly Quote Sheds Light On Why He Left UCLA For Pay Cut And Demotion At Ohio State

I respect Chip’s decision here. It’s tactical and well-thought out. Always good to have a framework of thinking for big life moves.

PGA Waste Management Open Bartender Reveals Why They Were Ordered To Stop All Alcohol Sales

Seems like every year, the Waste Management gets bigger and rowdier. On Saturday, they made the call to stop serving booze. There’s a lot of talk about how something has to give, the PGA needs to do something, etc. They have to play their hand delicately and deliberately: The tournament is a financial juggernaut for the tour and golf culture as a whole, yet if you come down too heavy-handed with restrictions or format changes, you risk biting the 500,000 hands that gather in Arizona every February to feed you.

BONUS: Here’s a video of Offset throwing $5,000 every roll on craps at The Bellagio after midnight on the night before the Super Bowl. We posted it on our socials because it was too good and sent in from a friend of the site.
