11 Things You Missed On The Internet | 1.1.24

2024 is the year you do that thing.

Hey… Happy New Year!

See you in the history books, 2023. New year, new you. Out with the old, etc. For old acquaintance be forgot and all that jazz.

New Year’s Day – a time for resets, college football, and collective hangovers. It’s our cue to shift gears: Think big. Move forward. Shake things up. Open the door of possibilities. Do the work. Dream. Achieve. It’s Day 1 of a blank slate. Let’s write some compelling chapters in the book this year, aye?

I love New Year's Day and have a cherished family tradition: making pork and sauerkraut, a nod to an old Pennsylvania Dutch custom believed to bring good luck ("viel glück" in German). This tradition is more than just a superstition for me—it's a delicious way to start the year right with a full belly from a home cooked meal. In the few years I skipped this ritual, things didn't go as well, which might just be coincidence (or a self-fulfilling prophecy?), but why risk it? I'm not about to gamble with the New Year's promise of good fortune.

This year I’m seasoning a pork loin with brown sugar and spices, then slow smoking it on my Ninja Woofire smoker. I’ll mist it with apple juice every 20 minutes or so during the smoke while watching the Rose Bowl. The sauerkraut is easy: Throw it in a pot on the stove out of the jar, simmer it with a bunch of sliced apples. I'll also make Bisquick dumplings, per my grandmother’s tradition. They soak up all the juices from the sauerkraut and apples.

Maybe it's a bit old-fashioned, but embracing these traditions feels increasingly important to me as I get older. They're not just recipes; they're a cherished part of my heritage. As the Latin saying goes, 'Antiqua sunt vinanda' – 'Old things are to be cherished.' It's a reminder of the richness that traditions bring to our lives, connecting us to our past and guiding us into the future.

It’s going to be a great year. I can feel it in my bones. To health, wealth, and a breezy ride around the sun. Cheers to auspicious beginnings.
